Here are the two main piazzas in Ascoli Piceno, the city in the Marche region where my great-grandfather William is from. Left is Piazza Arringo, a civil & religious center with Cathedral S. Emilio and the Arengo Palace which houses the town hall. Right is the Piazza del Popolo- "people's square". In the 1500's the porticos (far right) were added to keep the disorderly artisans' workshops from view and they formed a nice architectural link to the massive medieval structures - the Church of S. Francesco (back) and the Palazzo dei Capitani (far left and behind us in the photo). The most wonderful cappucino can be had at a little bar in the corner of this piazza (mid photo-far back) for 1 euro! (unheard of elsewhere).
